2 Graphical System (TOPX)
2.3 Yard/Truck Operation
2.3.1 Overview
The management of the Yard is the most important operation in the terminal as the movement of the yard
equipment from and to the vessels and external vehicles in the yard must be controlled and co-coordinated so
that it is free flowing with a minimum of ‘traffic jams’ and there is a minimum of waiting time for the
processing of containers.
This efficient yard flow is created by the setting up of yard allocation ranges by the yard management team,
for the currently scheduled vessels.
Multiple Allocation areas can be set up, marking out
several areas of the yard for containers with the same specific attributes. In setting up these ranges, the
stacking pattern rules for each range are assigned, as are the number of containers to be assigned
simultaneously to a range; and the overflow rules. These ranges can be saved in sets to be re-activated at
later times during future visits of the vessel, avoiding the need for setting up the same allocation filters
many times in the future. The allocation ranges can be fine-tuned, as the processing for a vessel is carried
out and these settings saved for future use.
The yard can be viewed in various orientations; container attributes can be colour coded for quick
identification and, due to some clever design, various sections of the yard can be viewed in one window without
the need to open new windows when a new section of the yard is viewed.

Key Benefit
The yard editor, which is similar to a drawing tool, enables a user to quickly draw up or modify a
terminal's yard map when creating or making a change to the yard geometry.
By saving sets of allocation filters, the user does not have the repetitive task of re-entering allocation
ranges in future and any number of sets of allocation filters can be quickly recalled.
Through ergonomic design and using a minimum number of key strokes, viewing yard profiles or other graphical
yard details and container information is fast and easy to do.
